Welsh Purchasing Card

December 2008

Public service bodies in Wales are estimated to spend about £4 billion each year on goods and services from suppliers.

The UK Public Sector makes extensive use of Purchasing Cards to pay for a broad range of goods and services.   In Wales the Welsh Purchasing Card (WPC) is a preferred ordering and payment method. The Welsh Purchasing Card is designed to eliminate bureaucracy in purchasing and deliver cost savings.

The card is available to the public sector in Wales on a no-fee basis and encourages staff to obtain goods quickly and easily. It offers a free electronic management system tailored to each organisation's needs. Usage of the Card is growing fast, 81 organisations across Wales are using the card, spending on average £2.6m per month with the 3,600 cards currently issued; these organisations include the NHS, Local Government, Higher and Further Education and Assembly Sponsored Public Bodies such as The Countryside Commission for Wales and National Library for Wales.

If you are currently a supplier to the public sector, or you are intending to, you should seriously consider becoming Purchasing Card (Visa and Mastercard) enabled. There are significant benefits to be had, including reduced transaction costs and fast payment.

Welsh Bros Foods LtdDiamond Discovery client, Welsh Bros (Foods) Ltd, have over 40 years experience supplying hotels, restaurants, public bodies and also contract catering to a growing wholesale customer list.

Earlier this year Welsh Bros tendered for a new contract to supply schools within Pembrokeshire County Council, one
of the requirements was to accept payment by The Welsh Payment Card.

Welsh Bros director Alan Heycock contacted Diamond Discovery Software Limited with a view to integrate payments received through the WPC directly into the ledgers of their accounting system.

Diamond Discovery Software Limited had three months to specify, write and prove the software in order for Welsh Bros to go live on the 1st of October.  Alan Heycock was pleased to report Diamond delivered on time, on budget and correct to specification.

If you wish to accept WPC payment from the Welsh public sector or require further information please e-mail wpitswansea@wales.gsi.gov.uk.
