ISO 9000: the 2008 update to the Standard

November 2008

What is ISO 9000?

ISO 9000 is the internationally recognised standard for an organisation's internal Quality Management System (QMS).  The term 'Quality' refers to all those features of a product or service which are required by the customer.

An organisation's QMS refers to the actions it takes to ensure that its products or services satisfy its customers' quality requirements and complies with any regulations applicable to those products or services.

Benefits of ISO 9000

Organisations will often need ISO 9000 certification to qualify for a tender or to achieve preferred supplier status: typically for a Local Authority.  However, there are many other benefits that can be added to these, including:

The 2008 update

Every now and then, International Standards are updated in order to keep them relevant to the business environment and the requirements of various business sectors.  ISO 9000 is undergoing such an update now and the release of the new standard is imminent.

Organisations will be given time, normally 12 to 24 months, to comply with the new standard, after which time, if they have not complied, they lose their certification.  If you are currently certified to ISO 9000:2000, you will need to update to the 2008 issue if you wish to retain your certification.
