Updating Diamond on Windows 7 and Vista
April 2010
In Windows XP, it was “traditional” to install whole applications in C:\Program Files, and ours could be found in C:\Program Files\Diamond Discovery and our data in sub-folders, e.g. C:\Program Files\Diamond Discovery\DATA.000.
Microsoft increased the security in Vista by introducing User Access Control (UAC) which would prompt users if any action required administrative privileges and also “disallowed” writing to C:\Program Files. Most people got around this by turning UAC off, not least because the prompts got on their nerves.
The good news is that, in Windows 7, the UAC prompts can be changed from “Always notify” to “Never notify”, with a few intermediate settings. However, the restriction on C:\Program Files has been increased so that “normal” programs can no longer write to this location.
From version 6.4.6, Diamond Discovery programs will be installed in C:\Program Files\Diamond Discovery as before, but the data folder (which we call the "Diamond Root") in Windows Vista and “higher” will now be “C:\ProgramData\Diamond Discovery”. It is worth noting that C:\ProgramData is a hidden folder.
When updating from Diamond versions earlier than 6.4.6, especially on Vista/7 Operating Systems, we suggest the following procedure:
1. Back up your data from within Diamond Discovery
2. Uninstall the old version of Diamond Discovery
3. Install the new version of Diamond Discovery
4. Restore your data from within Diamond Discovery
For our Support Club customers, we will gladly talk you through this process if necessary.
