A tiny bit about Google Page Rank
May 2009
If you have a website, you really should be interested in Google PageRank. If you haven’t already heard of it, it is more important than you think as the success of your online marketing will depend on this and the similar mechanisms in other search engines.
So, what is Google PageRank and why should we be interested?
In a techie nutshell: “PageRank is a link analysis algorithm used by Google’s search engine that assigns a numerical weighting to each element of a linked set of documents with the purpose of measuring its relative importance within the set.” This roughly translates to Google seeing a site as significantly more relevant if other sites link to it, which are themselves deemed credible.
The upshot of this is the more sound and credible links to your site, all within a similar subject range, the better the position of your site in its listing position.
While the whole topic of Search Engine Optimisation is huge and complex, the following pointers may help achieve a better ranking:
- Ask customers and suppliers to provide links to your website.
- Make sure your web address is on the vast array of business directories.
- Write articles for online publications that are willing to include a link.
- Be active on professional forums, including your web address in your credentials or as a signature.
The link text itself is also important. Using the words ‘Click Here’ are completely pointless; saying something like ‘See our range of Accounting Software with Stock Control’ will allow the search system to understand the relevancy of the link.
