Using Google’s Usefulness
March 2009
It would appear Internet users make substantial use of Google. Every day there are two billion searches carried out – that’s 23,148 per second, every second. Imagine, for example, you wanted to know how many legs a millipede has – where would you turn?
However, according to Google, we are merely scratching the surface of the available features. Did you know:
- Google can convert currencies and units; try “10 USD in GBP” or “80 km in miles”
- Google can limit the search to a specific site; try “site:wikipedia.org diamond”
- Google can search specific file types; try “filetype:pdf using email”
We’re still only scratching the surface. At the top of Google’s pages there are links to news, maps and images, plus a link to “more”.
So, maybe when you have a moment, have a dig through the help articles on searching which will make finding the right information faster and more accurate.
By the way, common millipedes have between 80 and 400 legs, although the rare species Illacme Plenipes can have up to 750. This will be useful in a pub quiz one day – plus, Google can find the pictures.
